The Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Exam is administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).  This credential is awarded to successful certification candidates and is valid for 5 years.

Eligibility


Candidates for the PMHN must:

Hold a valid RN license in any US State or equivalent.  Have practiced an equivalent of 2 years full time as a registered nurse. Accrued at least 2,000 hours of clinical practice in psychiatric mental health nursing within the last three years. Completed at least 30 hours of continuing education in psychiatric mental health nursing in the last three years.



Exam Details


The is a Computer Based Exam and is conducted year round at Test Centers located all over the United States .
The current fee for the examination is $390 for initial certification and $350 for renewal of certification for general non members. For members, the initial certification charges vary from $270 to $340 and renewal charges vary from $200 to $240.
On confirmation of eligibility, the candidate can schedule the examination within a window of 90 days.
The candidates receive their score immediately after the exam.
Candidates can apply for renewal of their certification 3 months before expiry.
The exam is three and a half hours.<



Exam Format


The exam has 175 multiple choice questions, out of which 150 questions are evaluated and scores considered for the present exam, and 25 questions are non scored pretest questions.
