How to Prepare For the Nursing Entrance Test (NET)

Popular Study Guides

When applying to nursing school, most will require that you take a Nursing Entrance Test or NET with many of the schools offering it at their location but there are other sites where it is given as well so you need to research where and when it is given and how to register. You can often register online. Each nursing school’s requirements for acceptable scores from this test will vary so you need to determine what a minimal passing score will be for your school.

The Nursing Entrance Test covers seven different subjects that include: Essential Math Skills, Learning Styles Inventory, Reading Comprehension Skills, Reading Rate, Skill Level Profile, Social Interactions Profile (Stress) and Test Taking Skills. Of these the most important are the reading comprehension skills and the essential math skills. As indicated you will need to find out your nursing school’s minimum score requirement but the national average score for reading is 59 and for math it is 69.

This doesn’t mean that the other five sections are not important – they are – and you should ensure that you are well prepared in all of the sections as they will be used as a general assessment of your overall abilities. It doesn’t mean you should panic either because if you were an average or above average student in high school you should not have any problem with this test.

Being prepared to take the test means studying for the exam and not waiting until the last minute to do so. Study guides are available that will provide you with sample questions so you will be familiar with the types that will be asked. Flash cards are an easy and convenient way to study and are good for math in particular where you can keep formulas or other data that is important. Practice tests are available in the study guide and self assessments that will help you to identify problem areas.

The practice tests should be taken when you first start studying and then a couple of times before your exam. This way you can concentrate on your weaker areas and yet get a good idea of how you should do on your actual test. If you study over a period of time and not cram it all into a few days you should be able to have no problem passing your NET.
